Workshop and Class Policies

WORKSHOPS and classes offered by local and out-of-state instructors can be scheduled as time and interests allow.  Workshops are open to all members on a first-come, first-served basis and seats will be reserved when full payment for the class is received.   A waiting list will be compiled if the class is full. Refunds will be made only if the instructor cancels the class or if a reserved space can be filled from the waiting list for the workshop.

If you are interested in signing up, email fablv.scribes@gmail.com and indicate which workshops you would like to sign up for, please note, you must become a member to attend the workshop.

Seats are limited but all classes are online via Zoom in 2021.  Supply lists will be sent in advance of the classes, generally no less than 4-6 weeks prior.

The workshops are all being done via Zoom and recorded. If you’re not able to join us on the days scheduled, a link to the recording after each class session will be sent to the members who have paid for the class so you won’t miss a thing. Also,
we will be setting up a private FaceBook page for you to post your work for the instructor to critique. If you need help connecting to us via Zoom our Internet Chair can help, contact her through our email: fablv.scribes@gmail.com.

Notes: Sign up no later than 48 hours prior to the workshop. Cancellations are not subject to refunds.

Please understand that recordings and handouts are subject to copyright laws - please do not copy any class recording or share class handouts.

Pat Blair: Beginning Copperplate
Tuesdays in March - 16 / 23 / 30 - 10:00-12:00 PST
(two hour class with 30 minutes for questions)

Copperplate is an elegant script style of lettering which is characterized by thick, shaded downward strokes and hairline thin upward strokes. This introductory workshop will study the unique, pressure-sensitive motion of the pointed flexible nib, and the control needed to form the basic letterforms. We will move on to study the delicately expressive capitals, giving the beginning student the knowledge and understanding of the classic copperplate form.

Pat Blair recently retired as the lead calligrapher for The White House.  We are so lucky she is teaching via Zoom.

With a basic knowledge of the Copperplate Script, create pages with Copperplate lettering of quotes and then enhance our pages with the addition of pen-drawn florals as well as painted ones. The garden will begin to grow and flourish. We will finish it with a portfolio we make from paper to hold our work.

Reggie Ezell: Blackletter & Variations
Thursday and Friday - August 26 - 27 - 10:00-1:30 PST

Reggie is doing a two-day class with each day being 90 minutes of instruction, 20 minute break, and then another 90 minutes of instruction for a total of a 3 hour class.

Blackletter (Gothic or Old English) is a versatile hand with many variations added over the years.  It was first used in the 400s when the need for a more compressed style of lettering resulted when the demand for manuscripts exceeded the available vellum (calf skins) or parchment (sheep skins).

Carrie Imai: Dancin’ Pen: Variations on Italic
Tuesdays and Thursdays in October 5 / 7 and 12/ 14 - 10:00-12:00 PST

Carrie will be sending supplies to each of the participants.

Carrie's Description of Dancin' Pen:
“Dancin’ Pen” was born from my book of the same name.  It’s my funky twist on the Italic alphabet.  It all started with the Bone alphabet and pen manipulation and then ran amok into all my other alphabets.  I have also drawn inspiration from my Italic Variations class, which analyzes each component part of the alphabet and then stretches each component to its limit to create new, expressive alphabets.  Alphabets should not need labels, but should serve to convey emotion and the feeling you get when you read a piece of words that moves you.  You need to be able to write letters that says what you feel.

This class will give you the tools to morph your Italic alphabet into an unlimited number of new forms for your use.  It will free you from the “rules.”  So come step out of the box and express yourself.  You will surprise yourself with the most exciting letterforms you’ve ever made!
